akon f. Stiles P - locked up

I’ve been meaning to post. But life during these past two weeks has been HECTIC. Pulling 13 hour days with group projects, portfolios, papers, lab practicals, & an onslought of miscellaneous bullshit has taken its toll. So here’s some rambling … in no particular order … I forgot what I really wanted to say anyways.

I am sooo tired. The previous weekend was fun. Following an NSCS meeting, we went to the Homecoming game. We always seems to lose at home. I got irritated by the by a whole bunch of people acting so drunk - so we all left after the halftime show. Ann, Jan and I decided that would be the last football game we go to. Probably ever. And fuck the 5-dollar parking fee.

I'm afraid these frat boys are in the crack - the crevice between teenagers and husbands-in-training. And unfortunately, it's a physiological fact that within the crack you will find the asshole.

Headed back to Boca then chilled at Mizner Park with a few more friends who we met up with after. Had a good time watching an old man manuever his little scooter thing at Ruby Tuesdays. He parked next to the bathrooms then mysterisouly came out with a package … haha. After, we considered watching the Incredibles for the 2nd night in a row but drove down to some beach instead. Oh my goodness, it was a beautiful night – not cold or hot, just perfect. Left around 11 or 12 or something like that and crashed as soon as I got home.

We were all sorta on the downside coz it would be our last NSCS meeting till January. Ah well, I’ve been having a blast … plus me and Christy are getting set for Golden Key International! Mwahahahaha! And I so totally have a partner for intermural volleyball! NEXT FALL WILL BE SO KICK ASS!!!!!

My mom was trying to get me to go Christmas shopping with her. But from this point until December 4th (when ryan gets here) I’m so gonna penny pinch it!! So she went with my dad and they just got home with hella paperwork and folders in their arms. They were this close to (spontaneously) closing a deal on a new house. GEEZE. And at $600-thousand, talk about pressure to get shit done and start bringing in some real money huh? But yeah, next time, I think ill go with them … you know just in case they decide to be all spontaneous and spend away our college tuition hahaha …

In between the craziness of school and work, I’ve managed to catch up with some people. Rarely are the mornings when I don’t wake up to a phone call from Brian in Hawaii – hope your getting through some shit buddy. And Chado is fixin ta steal a Jap2 book for me! Haha … MAHCUS called the other night … to remind me that him and mike just had their birthdays … hahaha, STILL as crazy as ever, those boys:

Joy: marj, some marc is on the phone for you
Marj: marcus?
Joy: I don’t know? I don’t think so.

(on the phone)
Marc: yo marj why does joy sound white?
Me: hahaha … she said you sound black! Whats up?
Marc: Yep, I’m working at American Eagle for the holidays
Me: in that case, I’m a size 0 in jeans ;)
Marc: five-fingah discount! petite 0 right? Haha … “petite” … I know the sizes!

Caught jenna on aim and had the best 2 minute im session ever. We agreed: updates with everyone HAS been drastic lately. I finally got my ass to apologize and get back in touch with baskwill again – just in time to clear the karma slate for the holidays! Hahaha … btw: sheila, email me! Besides the catching up, ive been keeping up with Ayden’s pictures on familiar faces. THAT BABY IS SO DAMN CUTE! I’ll either post some pics or the links later.

I’m not sure what the plans are for this weekend. Joy and my mom are working on Thanksgiving so we prolly won’t head out to Orlando till Saturday. We’re trying to visit Ives too but right now it looks as if we’ll just go with the flooooooooooow … either way: don’t bother me, I’ll be KNOCKED OUT. Hahaha

do you know how awesome you are for reading through that mess? in case i dont get the chance to say it:

HAPPY THANKS-THANKS THANKS-THANKSGiViNG ALL!

love you and miss you all.

veteran's day

the college was closed today (including henderson). but instead of chillin, i went to get some field work done at jeff davis middle school (palm beach county had make-up days from the hurricanes). when i first started there a few weeks ago, it was soooooo overwhelming. i do TA work with an ESOL teacher. all six of her classes are part of the intensive ESOL program = 5 out of 6 of her classes are taught 98% of the time in spanish. before this experience, i never thought about what it would be like to have a student (let alone a whole class!) who i couldn't communicate with. in the beginning it was frustrating but then it encouraged me to brush up on my spanish(hah!) so i went to joy aka miss-honors-spanish-3, an online translator (THE reason i passed spanish 2 back in 9th grade!) and D-D-D-D-D-DORA! hahahaha ... the kids laugh with me coz i'll end every sentence with "comprende? comprendar? tu comprendes?"haha ...

but yeah, on to what i really wanted to say about my field work today: ms. poekert (the teacher) started the morning with, "since we're in school today when we should be off saluting our Veterans, we're going to learn about them, how/why they are important to our country, and why we should always take the time (not just a day out of the whole year) to remember their services ..." we were doing language exercises (english practice) and listing adjectives that describe veterans. watching and listening to them respond (even if it was in spanish) was simply incredible. i was witnessing the manifestation of understanding: concepts of bravery, heroism, respect for soldiers (no matter the differing opinions on the war) were expanding beyond language barriers. these kids who have been on american soil for less than 4 months (some even as recent as 2 weeks ago!), who can barely speak a word of english, who arent even citizens, were expressing reverence for the veterans of this country. it was inspiring.

i haven't been this emotionally moved on Veteran's Day in a looong while. i guess i was just thinking a lot about things to be thankful for in life and all the things that i tend to take for granted. i just wanted to get this out before the day was through: i am SOOOOO incredibly proud of my dad and what he does for our country. realizing this makes every day more and more amazing. it is wonderful to be alive ... to be with my family ... to be part of this nation. so thanks - to all of our parents, our friends, our boyfriends - for sacrificing for us, contributing to the greatness of this nation, and for simply doing the damn thing.

i hope you all took the time today. love you and miss you all.

I am the youth vote. And I’m tired of being preached at, studied and wooed. I want to be educated, listened to and, most of all, respected.

Everyone has a theory as to why I don’t vote, but no one really asks me.

So I’ll explain.

I am neither lazy nor apathetic. I’m confused and frustrated. I am told to care about issues like Social Security and health care, when chances are high that I won’t even find a job after I graduate from college. I juggle low-wage, part-time jobs or a full-time class schedule, and I’m not necessarily available on November 2.

I cannot be accurately represented by percentages and statistics. I cannot be graphed and charted. I am not a Democrat, Republican or other. I’m a mixed bag of experiences and influences, and no one can expect how I will vote when I do vote.

I am not ignorant. I know what’s going in the world – even if I hear it mostly from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” And yes, at times I do care more about the latest episode of “The Sopranos” than the headline news.

That’s because I live the headline news, I know about poverty and crime. I live it every day.

I am not disengaged, I’m worn out. Sometimes I feel that no matter how I vote, there will still be war, crime and poverty. And I have other things on my mind. I am worried about skin cancer, drunken drivers, eating disorders, what I’m going to be when I grow up, how I’m going to get there and what I’m going to do Friday night,

I don’t know the difference between President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry because they don’t take time out from kissing babies and the behinds of corporate executives to tell me. Anyway, sex scandals, wars based on false pretenses and broken promises have left me cynical about all politicians.

Howard Dean tried to change my mind about the political process. He made me a part of his campaign, rather than a target. He recognized the power I hold, rather than ignoring my potential.

I am active on campuses across the country, but this part of me is recognized only as a minority – a few bright stars in an otherwise dark sky.

I am not a dark knight. I will not ride in on my horse come November and steal the election for one candidate or another. I don’t know if I will even really vote at all. But I do know that I am 48 million strong. And if someone would just reach out to me – not just during election years, but everyday – I would show them overwhelming support at the polls.

I am the youth vote.
